Weight Loss - The Most Important 3 Pounds

Despite billions of dollars spent on weight-loss programs, diet pills, exercise equipment and books in the effort to lose weight, the number of overweight men, women and children in North America keeps rising. Why? Perhaps because the vast majority of weight loss products and programs address the symptoms rather than the root cause of overeating: the subconscious mind.

What if I told you it is as important to manage the thoughts you feed yourself as it is to manage the food you eat?

Your outer physical condition is simply a reflection of your inner world. As a hypnotherapist I have come to deeply respect the power of the mind. I believe the root cause of most overeating is mental, emotional or spiritual rather than physical. Successful weight loss is much more about changing your mind that about trying to change your body. When you change your mind, your body will follow automatically.

The human brain weighs approximately 3 pounds and it's the most important key to your weight loss success.

Perhaps in the past you have managed to lose weight through diet and exercise. However if you failed to address the subconscious thoughts that created the problem in the first place, the weight probably returned. This is because your subconscious thoughts automatically drive the behaviors that lead to your being overweight. It's been said that in a battle between the conscious mind and the subconscious mind, the subconscious eventually wins. The good news is that it's possible to reprogram your subconscious mind with healthier thoughts.

When you reprogram your subconscious mind, your behavior changes automatically.

If you are willing to accept the concept that most of your beliefs are actually feelings or opinions rather that facts, then you are in a position of power. Once you own your statement of "fact" as a belief, you can choose whether it's useful to keep it. If not, you may change it to a more supportive belief. Here's the paradox:

It's not about proving whether your beliefs are true or not, it's about choosing better beliefs.

Let's see how this might work:

Desired Outcome: A healthier, slimmer body.

Belief: "I hate to exercise."

Ask yourself: "Is this a fact or simply something I have thought over and over?"

"Does this belief support the outcome I desire? If not, what belief or beliefs would support my desired outcome?"

Create better beliefs: "I believe it's possible to enjoy exercise."

"Lots of people enjoy exercise. Maybe I'm missing out on something good!"

"I am enjoying the process of learning to enjoy exercise."

"I look forward to my morning walk with friends."

"Exercise energizes my mind and body."

"I love to exercise!"

Start paying attention to your thoughts, feelings and opinions.

At first it may feel strange to adopt new beliefs. The challenge for your ego is to acknowledge that you do indeed have a choice! Isn't it interesting how the conscious mind so easily accepts an old, stale, unhelpful belief, but resists a healthier new belief? Remember, a belief isn't the same thing as a fact. You may be surprised to find how easy it is to let go of many of your beliefs once you truly realize they're not working well for you.

One of the easiest ways to reprogram your subconscious mind for effortless weight loss is hypnosis.

Fat Burning Foods

Are there any foods that burn body fat? If yes, how is it possible? It should be possible to lose weight by simply eating such foods. What are these foods?

The fat burning foods are foods that burn more calories than the calorie content of the foods itself. There are certain foods which actually burn more fat than the calorie content of the food itself. These fat burning foods or so called negative calorie foods are natural plant foods.

Fruits rich in vitamin C like limes, lemons, oranges, grapefruit and tangerines have fat burning properties. Some of the other fat burning foods are asparagus, beet root, broccoli, cabbage, carrot, apple, blueberries, and watermelon. It you eat these fat burning foods and do some exercise, it will boost your metabolism and burn calories at a faster rate for several hours even after exercise.

A recent research reports that calcium in dairy products can boost weight loss by increasing fat breakdown in fat cells. If you compare a dairy-rich versus a dairy-poor diet you can nearly double the rate of weight and fat loss with the same level of calorie restriction.

Not eating enough will slow your metabolism and deteriorating your health. Note that in order to lose weight you have to burn more calories than you consume. This can be done by eating negative calorie foods. This will help your body burning up the excessive stored fat.

Calorie Cycling - And Why It Works

Thanks to the weight loss industry, many people think that weight loss is a complex, overwhelming process.

It's not their fault - companies have spent millions of dollars trying to confuse dieters, so that they helplessly spend their money, hand-over-fist, in order to find the latest and greatest "cure".

But people who are able to get "out of the box" and learn about simple and proven weight loss methods tend to have the huge advantage. This is because once they realize that food and the patterns in which they eat is more powerful than any kind of weight loss pill or surgery... they have complete mastery over their body.

Once these people have a grasp of how to eat, they never again have to worry about gaining weight back or becoming fat ever again.

Because it's very, very easy!

All people have to do in order to lose weight is to shift their calories. That's it!

With typical low-calorie or low-carbohydrate diets, people eventually end up plateauing. Their bodies adjust to the diet, and weight loss halts.

The weight loss industry doesn't want to acknowledge this, though, because low calorie, low fat, and low carbohydrate products account for millions of dollars in revenue. People constantly switch up the amount of calories that they eat on a daily basis. They have low days and high days... and because their bodies never know what to expect, they can never adjust accordingly. Because of this, people continue to lose pounds upon pounds of weight.

Although bodybuilders and other body-conscious people have known about calorie cycling for decades, this is not popular to mainstream America because of the lack of money that people can make from it. With calorie cycling, there's no need for people to buy certain kinds of foods or restrict themselves in any kind of way... so there's not a lot of money in it for companies.

Rachel has lost 100 pounds herself, and is passionate about helping other people do it too. She has been featured in Woman's World, among others.

Gastric Bypass Causes Hair Loss: Can It Be Avoided?

Surprisingly, hair loss is one of the reasons female pre-operative patients sit on the fence before deciding to have gastric bypass surgery. Obese people, particularly obese women, often have lush gorgeous hair. Of course they do its well fed and nourished! How many of us have been described as the woman with beautiful hair and a pretty face? What person in their right mind would give up one of their beautiful features?

Hair loss usually occurs in the fourth of fifth month following weight loss surgery. During the phase of rapid weight loss, caloric intake is marginal. This puts the body in a state of panic called starvation. Think about the pictures of prisoners of war. Most victims of this atrocity are without hair because they are literally starving to death. A healthy body normally sheds ten percent of hair follicles at any given time. When a body is starving roughly thirty to forty percent of hair follicles are sacrificed as the body channels nutrition to more vital areas. During this phase hair loss is dramatic, often patients find clumps of hair on the shower floor. Remaining hair becomes drab and lifeless.

I knew hair loss was a potential result of weight loss surgery, but because Im a cup-half-full person, I didnt believe that hair loss would happen to me! That just happens to other people, I told myself! Imagine my surprise when my blonde locks were littering the bathroom floor like hair saloon. I shed some tears over that.

The hair loss is a transient effect of your gastric bypass surgery and will be resolved when nutrition and weight stabilize. When my hair began falling out, my husband, who has been a proponent of vitamin supplements all his life, found a vitamin specifically formulated for building strong healthy hair. The vitamin I take for healthy hair and nails is Silica Complex by Puritans Pride. It contains calcium, magnesium, zinc, boron, betaine and horsetail extract. Consumption of this supplement almost immediately retarded my hair loss and renewed my dull lifeless hair. I will continue taking this supplement throughout my life. Three years after surgery my hair is long, full and lustrous one would never know I had suffered significant hair loss. In hindsight, I would certainly begin taking this supplement prior to my surgery. In the very least I would begin taking it soon after surgery before the signs of hair loss were apparent.

Weight Loss: You Are What You Think!

Most of us know and have heard the phrase, You are what you eat. However, is it possible that another phrase also applies? You are what you THINK. Yes, it is very possible that this phrase is also an accurate representation of how our perceptions and expectations affect our body and overall health.

We are just beginning to understand how the mind and our beliefs affect out body and how it responds to illness. However there is currently enough documented evidence to prove that the mind does in fact affect our body. The key behind all of these studies seems to be perception or expectation. Those individuals with positive perceptions of an event and positive expectations seem to create that reality while the same seems to be true of those with negative perceptions and expectations.

If we allow for this possibility then we must consider what it is we believe about ourselves and how we feel about the life we are leading. If we have a perception of ourselves and our life that is negative then it will tend to manifest itself eventually in one way or another. This often takes place with people who are unhappy with their life but yet afraid to make changes. When they do not take action the body itself seems to create an illness to bring about the change they seemed unable to do for themselves.

Deepak Chopra has spent numerous years studying this aspect of wellness and I highly recommend that anyone wanting to explore this field of research read his books. The book I have found most helpful is Unconditional Life. He gives many case studies of individuals who were affected either positively or negatively by their state of mind and the perceptions they had of their illness.

We owe to ourselves to be happy and to be hopeful and to expect the best out of life.

We owe it to ourselves to make the most of the time we are given.

We owe it to ourselves to do the things that we fear and take the steps we are afraid to take.

Life is about expansion and when we cease to expand we become stagnant and stagnation eventually brings about death. This usually happens in the inner life first and then it manifests in the physical life.

For example, someone begins to feel bored, apathetic and depressed about life and this will lead to a withdrawal from contact with other people and then soon thereafter the body itself will begin to manifest symptoms.

You must choose to be happy and to expect the best and to believe in miracles. A favorite quote is the following:

"Happiness is a way of travel - not a destination"
    --Roy M. Goodman

This is something you should definitely keep in mind not only for the sake of your health but also for your entire experience of life. If you do not like your experience of life then perhaps it is time to change your point of view.

Cardio Madness - How Much Is Enough?

When it comes to weight loss, cardiovascular training is important to perform. However, if it is the only exercise that you are doing for weight loss then you are definitely doing yourself a disservice. Also, how do you know when you are doing too much of it?

The purpose of performing cardiovascular training

Cardio training involves movement of large muscle groups aerobically or anaerobically to increase function of the heart and blood vessel systems known as the cardiovascular system. Movement can be activities such as running, jumping, playing sports, treadmill, stationary bike, etc. It's long term benefits include lowered heart rate, lowered blood pressure, higher HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol) and much more.

When it comes to weight loss, it burns a tremendous amount of calories. However, more doesn't necessarily mean better. You want to maximize your cardio training so that you get the maximum results and that you don't waste your time.

How much is enough?

ACSM (American College of Sports Medicine) recommends the following:

Do moderately intense cardio 30 minutes a day, five days a week or do vigorously intense cardio 20 minutes a day, 3 days a week.

I won't disagree with this at all. I would follow the guidelines myself. However, let's take somethings into consideration. Generally, very few if any exercise organizations recommend performing cardio for more than 1 hour. So if you are doing it longer than 1 hour, I wouldn't recommend it. Unless you are an athlete who is fueling up during training so as not to drop off performance.

When you perform too much cardio, your performance could actually drop off. For example, if you are feeling like you are wearing down that is probably a sign that you are doing too much. If you stopped seeing results from your cardio training then it's time to do something else. If nothing is happening from your cardio results then it's time to change it up.

How to maximize your cardio training

One way that I recommend that you can maximize your cardio training is to keep doing different cardio training methods. For example, run for one day. Play basketball the next day. Go on the stationary bike the next time you train. Take a group exercise fitness class the next time. And keep varying it up. Make it so that it's never the same thing. The point is to keep the body guessing.

Another method is to perform short bursts of high explosive cardio training and then take it down. For example, your on the treadmill and you explode for 30seconds and then rest for 1min. You continue to train like this for no more than 15 minutes because it's so demanding physically.

Personally, I love to play soccer for my cardio training. It's fast at times, it's slow, it requires power and then it requires you to take it slow. I love the constant change in intensities. The same can be said about fitness boxing and cardiokickboxing. These are fun for me and I enjoy them very much.

The point is for you to maximize your cardio training so that you continue to see results. It's also important to do things that you like. I personally don't like to get on machines. I would rather compete or do something that I really like and that I can continue to do for a long time. But this article isn't about me it's about you. Follow these suggestions and guaranteed that you won't be guilty of doing too much cardio. For more information, visit my website and get a copy of my book "Don't Wait Get in S.H.A.P.E."

How Many Calories Do I Need Per Day?

How Do I Calculate Caloric Needs Based On My Goal (gain/loss/maintain)?

Listen, figuring out how many calories a day you need to lose weight, maintain your weight or gain weight really isnt too hard. And with the formula Im about to give you plus a very cool website, you can easily track where you are and what you need to do daily to reach your goals. So lets begin!

IF YOU DONT KNOW WHERE YOU ARE, THEN LOSING, MAINTAINING OR GAINING WILL BE IMPOSSIBLE!

Step 1:

Take your current body weight in pounds (lbs) and multiply by 11.

Example: 194 lbs x 11 = 2134 calories

This is what I need to just keep what I have, without moving. But remember, you do move. So you have to then calculate your metabolic factors into this so off to step 2

Step 2:

Figure out your metabolic factor according to the table below.

But first, some definitions to help you determine where you might fit in:

Slow Metabolism: You basically look at food and you seem to put on pounds. You can gain weight by eating salads but its difficult to lose the weight.

Moderator Metabolism: You can gain weight if you try. You can lose weight if you try. You really dont have trouble losing weight depending on what you want to do.

Fast Metabolism: You are the skinny guy or gal who can eat *ANYTHING* and it makes no difference. Gaining weight is difficult. Losing weight can happen overnight. Just by watching T.V. you seem to shed pounds.

Metabolic %

Under 30 years old
Slow Metabolism- 30%
Moderate Metabolism- 40%
Fast Metabolism- 50%

30-40 years old
Slow Metabolism- 25%
Moderate Metabolism- 35%
Fast Metabolism- 45%

Over 40 years old
Slow Metabolism- 20%
Moderate Metabolism- 30%
Fast Metabolism- 40%

Example: 2134 calories x 35% = 746.90

I took my calories needed above just to sit here and not move and multipled it by my metabolic factor and I find that I need an additional 746.90 calories because of my specific metabolism.

Step 3:

Put it together.

2134 + 746.90 = 2880.90 calories

I need 2,880.90 calories to maintain my current weight with my current activities.

Note: You can also adjust your metabolic factor if you do something that might take you to the next level. If you are a moderator metabolism person but you do distance running, it might make more sense to put your self in the fast category since you burn a lot more calories.

Step 4:

Now change the above with about 500 calories every day to reach your goals!

Lose Weight: I would take 2880.90 500 = 2380.90

Maintain Weight: I would just leave it at 2880.90 and continue what I was doing in my activities

Gain Weight: I would take 2880.90 + 500 = 3380.90

Note: 500 calories a day is just a general term everybody uses to say that adding this amount is within safe limits. Eat too much, and you end up storing fat. Cut too many calories and your body just goes into starvation mode and ends up retaining more fat. 500 is a safe, recommended guideline.

Step 5:

You must track what you are eating so youll know if youve made your goal for the day. And tracking food does not have to be complicated with weights and scales.

It's a shame that so many people just start training and never figure out what they need to eat daily to reach their goals.

You can keep doing the math over and over as you reach a goal. If you are bulking, your requirements will change as you progress. And when you lose weight they will as well. You might want to lose weight, reach a target weight and then maintain. So you will do this formula again when you have hit the weight you want.
