The medical perils of being overweight

Being over weight increases your risk for many serious medical problems. About 95 percent of people with diabetes have type 2 diabetes, which is closely tied to being overweight. Each year, more than 190,000 people die from diabetes or its many complications. For people who live with diabetes, it is a frequently disabling disease.

Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness in people between 20 and 74 years of age.

It is a major cause of kidney disease, requiring dialysis or kidney transplant.

People with diabetes are as much as four times more likely than others to have heart disease or suffer a stroke.

Diabetes causes nerve damage, which may require amputation of a toe, foot, or lower leg.

In men, diabetes is a frequent cause of erectile dysfunction.

There is no cure for diabetes, and it requires lifelong management and medication. All diabetics require a controlled diet to regulate blood sugar levels, and regular checkups to detect damage to the eyes, nerves, and blood vessels. There are ways to lower the risk of developing it, however. Although type 2 diabetes tends to run in families, people who are overweight and inactive are at much greater risk of contracting the disease.

Losing weight, controlling blood cholesterol levels, and engaging in some form of regular exercise are the best ways to prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes.

If you've watched any TV or done any web surfing lately, you've no doubt ran into countless ads for a new fad diet claiming it is the new magical cure to help you lose weight. Sure, you doubt their legitimacy, but you've tried everything else so you go for it, only to be let down once again. Here are some reasons to ditch these unreliable diets and stick with more tried and true methods.

It's easy to spot fad diets as they usually promise easy, immediate results. These diets usually sound too good to be true. Other times they will have numerous testimonials of people who have supposedly lost weight using the diet accompanied by dramatic before and after photos. Another gimmick is to include phrases such as "lose 10 pounds in 10 days."

These fad diets also will often show some form of scientific study and an oversimplified explanation. These studies ignore the differences in metabolisms and bio-chemistry. Often the studies were not conducted using the scientific method and contain no legitimate claims. Fad diets usually ignore or refute any true scientific evidence that disagrees with the program.

Then why is it that these diets seem to work? It depends on which one you are currently trying but this can often be linked to things such as water loss. Even when these diets do show quick results, the important thing to keep in mind is that these results are not permanent as it is not healthy to stay on them too long, nor would you want to given their blandness and strict rules, not to mention that the weight is usually gained back.

The AHA, American Heart Association, urges dieters not to go on fad diets for many reasons. One of which is that these fad diets usually force you to eat a single type of food, which keeps you from having a balanced diet. When a person eats only one thing, they can't get the vitamins and nutrients that the food doesn't contain. These foods are also so bland that people just can't stick with them. A good diet is something you can eat and enjoy now and for the rest of your life.

Easy Weight Loss With These 6 Principles

These are a few basic principles to weight loss any one can use right away. The only thing keeping you from applying them is the ability to decide if you will apply them. Make the decision to apply these principles and you will lose weight. If applying all of them is too overwhelming than pick one principle and implement right away. If your having a hard time choosing, I would start with eating a protein dense breakfast. Do this for a week than implement the next principle, and you will have formed positive eating habits which will lead to weight loss.

Here are the principles below;

Right after you wake:

Fill your plate with high quality protein, slow digesting carbohydrates, and healthy fats.

Every 2.5-3 hours after Breakfast:

Waiting more than 4-5 hours between meals causes you're your blood sugar to bottom out, leaving you weak, irritable and tired. The solution: frequent meals. Eating ore often helps regulate blood sugar levels, protecting your muscles from being broken down and used as energy.

How to eat:

Eat more protein rich foods because 30% of its calories are burned during digestion, compared with 8% of carbohydrates, and 2% of fats.

High Quality Protein; eggs, egg whites, fish, lean beef, turkey, chicken, low-fat milk, low-fat cheese, and plain-low fat yogurt are a few great examples.

Slow Digesting Carbohydrates; oats, onions, tomatoes, beans, green vegetables, berries, oranges, and apples are a few great examples.

Healthy Fats; olive oils, canola oil, fish oil, flaxseeds, nuts, sunflower seeds, olives, and avocados are a few great examples.

Consideration:

Carbohydrates; the fast-digesting kind-breads, pasta, rice, potatoes, baked goods, and candy-raise blood sugar quickly. This signals your body to stop burning and start storing fat, and forces it to use the excess sugar for energy instead (this is okay though before, during and after you workouts when your body is far more equipped to handle fast digesting sugars). High-sugar carbohydrates aren't always bad. In fact sometimes they're the smartest foods you can eat. The secret is timing. When you consume these sugars is very important to your goals.

After you workout: Fast-digesting carbohydrates are more desirable than the slow-digesting type. That's because an intense workout changes your body's priorities. As sugar is absorbed into your blood stream, it's preferentially shuttled to your muscles-instead of being used as fuel-and is stored there for later use. The kicker is that this forces your body to accelerate the rate at which it burns fat for energy.

When to consume simple carbohydrates:

Immediately after you finish exercising, ideally this should be a liquid meal, which speeds up the absorption of protein and carbohydrates to your blood stream. 1 hour after the post-workout shake is ideal for eating a solid meal with fast absorbing carbohydrates. Even better, combine fast and slow-acting carbohydrates with protein by choosing a lean meat and a green vegetable to go along with pasta, rice, or a potato. How Many Calories Do I Need Per Day?

How Do I Calculate Caloric Needs Based On My Goal (gain/loss/maintain)?

Listen, figuring out how many calories a day you need to lose weight, maintain your weight or gain weight really isnt too hard. And with the formula Im about to give you plus a very cool website, you can easily track where you are and what you need to do daily to reach your goals. So lets begin!

IF YOU DONT KNOW WHERE YOU ARE, THEN LOSING, MAINTAINING OR GAINING WILL BE IMPOSSIBLE!

Step 1:

Take your current body weight in pounds (lbs) and multiply by 11.

Example: 194 lbs x 11 = 2134 calories

This is what I need to just keep what I have, without moving. But remember, you do move. So you have to then calculate your metabolic factors into this so off to step 2

Step 2:

Figure out your metabolic factor according to the table below.

But first, some definitions to help you determine where you might fit in:

Slow Metabolism: You basically look at food and you seem to put on pounds. You can gain weight by eating salads but its difficult to lose the weight.

Moderator Metabolism: You can gain weight if you try. You can lose weight if you try. You really dont have trouble losing weight depending on what you want to do.

Fast Metabolism: You are the skinny guy or gal who can eat *ANYTHING* and it makes no difference. Gaining weight is difficult. Losing weight can happen overnight. Just by watching T.V. you seem to shed pounds.

Metabolic %

Under 30 years old
Slow Metabolism- 30%
Moderate Metabolism- 40%
Fast Metabolism- 50%

30-40 years old
Slow Metabolism- 25%
Moderate Metabolism- 35%
Fast Metabolism- 45%

Over 40 years old
Slow Metabolism- 20%
Moderate Metabolism- 30%
Fast Metabolism- 40%

Example: 2134 calories x 35% = 746.90

I took my calories needed above just to sit here and not move and multipled it by my metabolic factor and I find that I need an additional 746.90 calories because of my specific metabolism.

Step 3:

Put it together.

2134 + 746.90 = 2880.90 calories

I need 2,880.90 calories to maintain my current weight with my current activities.

Note: You can also adjust your metabolic factor if you do something that might take you to the next level. If you are a moderator metabolism person but you do distance running, it might make more sense to put your self in the fast category since you burn a lot more calories.

Step 4:

Now change the above with about 500 calories every day to reach your goals!

Lose Weight: I would take 2880.90 500 = 2380.90

Maintain Weight: I would just leave it at 2880.90 and continue what I was doing in my activities

Gain Weight: I would take 2880.90 + 500 = 3380.90

Note: 500 calories a day is just a general term everybody uses to say that adding this amount is within safe limits. Eat too much, and you end up storing fat. Cut too many calories and your body just goes into starvation mode and ends up retaining more fat. 500 is a safe, recommended guideline.

Step 5:

You must track what you are eating so youll know if youve made your goal for the day. And tracking food does not have to be complicated with weights and scales.

It's a shame that so many people just start training and never figure out what they need to eat daily to reach their goals.

You can keep doing the math over and over as you reach a goal. If you are bulking, your requirements will change as you progress. And when you lose weight they will as well. You might want to lose weight, reach a target weight and then maintain. So you will do this formula again when you have hit the weight you want.

Consider exercise. Exercise can seem as even more work than eating a healthy diet. If you decide to go to the gym five times a week, it will take time away from the things you used to do. Working out can not only cost you time and energy. You will have to have a gym membership, clothing and you will have to wash all your clothes more often. Maybe you don't have a clue about working out and will hire a personal trainer for a couple of weeks. Trust me, they are expensive.

When losing weight it boils down to the simple fact that as much as you put in your are going to get out of it. If you just want to spend a couple bucks on a book or two you won't lose much weight. When you put some effort into changing your diet you can do a lot for your weight loss, however to become healthy with your weight loss you will have to put quite some brain, time, energy and money into it. Therefore we can conclude that weight loss is not cheap, especially not if you want to do it well.
