Some Weight Loss Studies That Made The Headlines In 2007

Here are a few of the weight loss studies that made headlines for the year 2007. The results of this first study come as no surprise. The study showed that even low levels of exercise are beneficial. Participants walked briskly for thirty minutes a day three days a week. Their blood pressure decreased and their overall fitness improved. Waist and hip girth decreased significantly.

Another study showed if you are a cyclist you are at a greater risk of osteoporosis. It's recommended that you include some weight bearing exercises in your workouts.

Aren't some of these studies just plain old common sense? Exercise is beneficial to the brain announced another 2007 study. The data showed exercise improved the cognitive function of the brain.

Using a pedometer caused significant increases in physical activity and significant decreases in body mass index and blood pressure. My advice, run out and buy a pedometer and keep track of your steps and mileage.

Did you know the more entertaining a television program the more you eat. That's right a study showed the more involved the subjects were in the TV show the more they ate.

There have been many studies over the years on Conjugated Linoleic Acid CLA. The 2007 study showed that CLA helps a person lose fat.

This one is a bit of a surprise. Overweight people did not benefit as much from strength training as did leaner people. Researchers showed that both groups benefited from strength training. It's just that overweight people did not gain as much strength or lean muscle mass.

Not so surprisingly, eating soup or a salad before your meal helps to curb your appetite. The study showed that soup took the edge off hunger.

When you think about it, the findings of this study make a lot of sense. Emotional eaters have the hardest time losing and keeping weight off.

This one's scary. Being overweight increases the risk of kidney cancer.

Hang on to your seat because Americans are fatter than ever. Didn't we all know this already? How much of our taxpayer money was spent on this one?

This one isn't too hard to believe. All diets have about the same results. Researchers reported that a typical dieter lost about 12 pounds no matter what diet they choose. Providing of course they stuck with it.

A lot of people won't like the results of this study. The Atkins diet resulted in greater weight loss than other diets.

I've got to tell you about this one. Newly married young men and women gained 6 to 9 pounds more than their peers who were not married. And if the couple lived together without the benefit of marriage the weight gain was not nearly as much.

So there you have it. These are just a few of the weight loss studies that made the headlines in 2007. I'll be watching the 2008 studies. Maybe scientist will find the miracle weight loss pill we've all been waiting for.

Diet Without Counting

Wouldn't it be so much easier to lose weight if we could diet without counting? Most people lack the motivation to diet because they don't have the patience to count and keep track of the calories, points, or carbohydrates they consume. They would much rather diet without counting. That is why the calorie shifting diet is gaining widespread popularity as a viable alternative to the other so-called "mainstream" diets.

Rather than focusing on the quantity of the food you out, the calorie shifting diet places its emphasis on what foods you eat and when you eat them. In fact, while on this diet, you can eat as much food as you want until you are satisfied at every meal. Further more, you are required to eat four full meals per day. Furthermore, you are required to eat food from all four food groups during the course of this diet. Even more compelling is the fact that you are required to take a mandatory three-day "cheat break" from the diet every two weeks, to give your body a chance to rest from the rapid weight loss you will have been experiencing.

While on this diet, you can expect to lose nine pounds for every eleven days of dieting. That comes out to approximately twenty pounds per month.

So how is it possible to lose weight that rapidly, while eating as much food as you want, four times a day, from all four food groups?

The answer lies in the theory of calorie shifting, which is based on the premise that you can trigger your body's metabolism to go into fat burning mode at will, simply by restructuring your diet in such a way that you shift the types of calories that you consume from meal to meal on a rotational basis. Doing so induces simulated nutritional deprivation which causes the body's metabolism to tap into its food stores as its instinctive "survival mechanism", while in reality you are eating healthy.

The success rate with this diet is very high due to the levels of satisfaction that are achieved during the dieting process. You never feel starved or deprived while on this diet. Plus you experience weight loss at a rapid pace, nearly a pound a day. The mere fact that you are able to take a 3-day break from the diet serves as a boon for many a dieter.

Weight Loss Supplements That Work

Everyday people waste their hard earned money on weight-loss supplements. They go to vitamin stores and natural food stores and walk out with bags of the newest "fat-burners". Most of these supplements and fat-burners do not work and they can have unwanted side effects.

If you want to lose weight and keep it off there are some supplements that can help. A one-a-day multivitamin, a calcium/vitamin D pill, a fish-oil pill, and green tea extract can help you shed pounds with no adverse side effects.

Multivitamins

You get most of your nutrients from carbohydrates. Vegetables, fruits, and whole grains are filled with vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals, flavanoids, and antioxidants that keep your body running well.

When you decrease your calorie or carbohydrate intake, you do not typically get all the nutrients you need. Taking a one-a-day multivitamin can help fill in the voids in your nutrition plan.

Calcium and Vitamin D

I recommend that everyone, especially women, take a calcium/vitamin D supplement. The combination of calcium and vitamin D can help you:

  • Lose weight,

  • Prevent osteoporosis,

  • Decrease blood pressure, and

  • Prevent cardiovascular disease.

Taking a calcium/vitamin D pill will supplement for what you are not receiving in your diet.

Fish-oil Pills

Fish-oil pills have polyunsaturated fats in them called omega-3 fatty acids. These "good" fats can help you:

  • Lose weight

  • Improve your cardiovascular health

  • Decrease your LDL "bad" cholesterol

  • Increase your HDL "good" cholesterol

To get the full benefits of omega-3 fatty acids, you should eat at least two servings of fatty cold water fish per week or take a daily fish-oil supplement that provides at least 600mg of omega-3 fatty acids

Green Tea

Green tea is filled with phytochemicals and antioxidants. These phytochemicals and antioxidants have many potential benefits, including:

  • Boosting metabolism

  • Decreasing your risk of cardiovascular disease

  • Decreasing your risk of cancer

To boost your metabolism and lose weight you could drink four cups of brewed green tea every day. You may not like the idea of drinking multiple cups of tea everyday. Instead of drinking the tea, you can also take 500mg of green tea extract (standardized for EGCG) once daily.

The combination of a one-a-day multivitamin, a calcium/vitamin D pill, a fish-oil pill, and green tea extract can help you lose weight. Stay away from those over-the-counter weight loss pills. They are a big waste of money.
