Weight Loss: The Key to Discipline

Recently, two co-workers of mine were discussing their weight loss efforts and part of that conversation stuck with me. One of them said, "It sure is a lot harder to lose weight than it is to gain it." The other one answered, "Yeah, thats because gaining weight is fun." I laughed with them, because there is some truth to that statement.

Yes, it can be fun to eat with abandonment and not think about whether what you are eating is healthy or not; it is only the consequences that are painful. Examples of shorter term consequences are pain in your stomach, indigestion, and sluggishness. The longer term consequences are high blood pressure, heart disease, and shortness of breath. Seeing your appearance change for the worse is painful too. Focusing on these consequences is key to developing self-discipline.

Discipline is necessary to achieve your weight loss goals and any goal that you want to achieve in life. After all, you dont have to employ discipline to do those things that you enjoy. For example, I wouldnt have to discipline myself to eat chocolate bars because I enjoy them, however I do have to discipline myself to limit them in my life. How do I do it? Discipline requires two skills: Desire and diversion.

Desire means that you have to want the goal that your discipline will help you achieve more than anything. For example, I wanted to lose weight and get healthy more than I wanted the chocolate bars. Each time I desired the chocolate bar, I had to remind myself of the alternate goal and make it real and vivid. I had to see myself with that goal already achieved and experience the pleasure of it. I had to make that pleasure more intense than the pleasure I imagined I would receive from eating the chocolate bar.

The second skill is diversion, which is simply engaging in an activity that diverted my attention away from the undesirable activity. In the chocolate bar example, I had to either give myself something that I would enjoy eating that was healthier for me or perform an alternate activity that would help me better meet my needs. For example, if I was angry, eating a chocolate bar would not help me, but taking a long walk to cool off likely would.

My co-worker was right: For many of us, losing weight is harder than gaining it. But we need to remind ourselves that, although it is harder to lose weight, it is not impossible. It is also worth the effort. Then we use our key of discipline to help us achieve what we want. It is the only way to get the body that we deserve.

The first rule as believed by those who are beginners in the field of fitness, is to leave the food you love the most. Well for most not so slim people, its food like processed cheese, pizza, chicken, beef etc. Its not easy to leave what you love. Yet its easier to balance the things you love along with what is nutritious. When a nutrition schedule is drawn for you, make sure you know what is in and what is out. If its meat and eggs all week long, its way too much fat! If its too much sparrow food, then its worse. Weight loss requires a smarter plan than that.

A person needs something way too desperately then he has to sacrifice the food he loves to eat. If he is strong willed then it is a piece of cake for him to let go of his cravings. Some can eat anything and everything they want and still look lean, while others are just not that lucky. Depending on your body structure and metabolism, you have to decide which meal and what exercise is essential for you.

Unfortunately for over weight people, no matter how much they try losing weight it seems like they are pushing the Himalayas. Scary but true! Its wise not to even mirror them. Its not worth a call! You set some standards for yourself. Give either a 100 percent or even lesser, but make sure whatever you do, you stick to your word, i.e. to lose as much weight as possible. Each week, is a new week and surely a brighter one.

You need regular fitness and not a body like Hitman, then its better to have an average percentage of what is known as compliance. Compliance in layman's term means fulfillment, observance, conformity etc. Compliance in fitness means what you should adhere to and what you should avoid.

There is a theory which was suggested by one of the fitness gurus. He said, "If you eat 5 small means a day, you eat about 35 meals a week. Around 32 meals are adhered to." This in turn means that you can have 3 or maximum 4 such parties or occasions which you can make merry in.

You can be in any one of the following scenarios, a) someone who wants to lose a few inches on the waistline and look decent, or b) someone who wants a perfect 36-24-36 kind of a figure. If its scenario A then having a compliance of 100% is sheer madness. On the other hand if you wish to be scenario B then you better slog night and day. Weight Loss System - European Pole Walking

I'm not one to latch onto fads. I tend to favor tried and true methods, such as walking, but I am always interested in new exercise techniques that might enhance the results. I am even more interested in new approaches that may help those with physical problems enter mainstream physical fitness more easily. So, when my wife showed me an article in a magazine about what they called, "pole walking", I did a little digging. Here's what I found out.

This is what is often called "Nordic walking". It is, put as simply as possible, the technique of walking with what resembles a pair of ski poles. As with skiing, the walker alternately moves the poles as he or she walks. Obviously, there is a "best" technique, but it's a little complicated to describe here. However, the basic method is first to grip each pole firmly but not tensely. Then, keeping the arms straight, swing your arms to approximately waist height and holding the poles diagonally behind you, help propel yourself forward alternating your right and left poles as you walk.

What has developed as an activity in its own right, Nordic walking was originally a means by which Finnish skiers could maintain fitness and ability during the off-season. Just as they skied on snow, they would walk on land, helping to propel themselves with poles. Obviously, these used in the sport are NOT ski poles. They are specially made and can cost anywhere from about $40 to over $200 per pair. You can determine optimum pole length by multiplying your height in inches by .72. The poles are adjustable.

So, what are the results of proper pole walking?

Well, among many research groups and facilities, the Cooper Institute in Dallas, tested the pole walking technique. Here are a few things they and others found out about pole walking.

1. Using the poles encourages the use of more muscles in the walking process, thus allowing you to burn fat more effectively.

2. The poles help take pressure off of joints, feet, back, etc. Once accustomed to the process, people report feeling better walking with them than without them.

3. Studies have shown that people walking with poles tend to lose more weight more rapidly than those simply walking. In fact, some studies indicate that pole walking may burn as much as 50% more calories than simply walking for exercise or weight loss.

Nordic walking has been popular in Europe for some time, and there actually is an organization dedicated to the activity - the International Nordic Walking Association. You can find their website at inwa.nordicwalking.com/.

Calories - two out of three American adults need to eat fewer. The rest struggle daily not to eat more. A calorie (or kilocalorie) is a measure of energy-producing potential.
